So the US Congress in the United States they decided that they are going to ban the consumption of alcohol. The prohibition. And they passed the law. And they tried to enforce the law using law enforcement. During that process, about half a million people were thrown in jail, millions of dollars were spent to enforced the law, thousands of people were killed when enforcing the law. And the consumption of the alcohol did not change. People were bootlegging in their own houses and manufacturing the alcohol in their own houses. And because of the process of making khmar or alcohol is so unhygienic and dirty, diseases were spreading. After 4 years of misery, the United States decided we can't go ahead with this and we have to stop it. After 4 years they lifted the ban and told the people..do whatever you want. It didn't work.
This is the mighty United States.
It could not enforce the law of banning alcohol. It couldn't. The most powerful nation on earth couldn't do it.
Let's go back to 1400 years earlier.
Jibrail a.s. came to Muhammad s.a.w. revealing the ayat saying that khamr or alcohol are the acts of evil or syaitan. Stay away from it.
يَـأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالاٌّنصَابُ وَالاٌّزْلاَمُ رِجْسٌ مِّنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَـنِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ
“O you who believe! Khamr, Maysir, Ansab, and Azlam are a filth of Shaytan’s handiwork. So avoid that in order that you may be successful.”
The ayah of quran came down to Muhammad s.a.w. banning the consumption of alcohol.
Rasullullah s.a.w. without any police or army or national guards conveyed the ayah, recited the ayah to the sahabah who were with him. The sahabah went out and carrying the news in the streets of Madinah and announcing that alcohol or khamr is now illegal.
Anas ibnu Malik said I was serving some of the sahabah alcohol. And we heard of the announcement in the street that alcohol is haram. He said I threw the jug from my hand. And some of the sahabah had the cups in their hand, they threw it. And some of them already had the alcohol in their mouth, they spitted it out. And some of them went as far as inducing vomit. To vomit whatever went into their stomach. It is said and was described the streets of Madinah were flowing with alcohol or khamr.
Immediate obedience.
Without any police, or without US Congress, without national guards, without law enforcement, without spending millions of dollars, without throwing any person in jail, the law was immediately followed.
Why?
How come it worked in Madinah but not in United States?"
